Erosion Control Blankets

Straw Straw / Coconut  Coconut Coir  Excelsior Turf Reinforcement Mats

Erosion Control Blankets are used in areas over soil that has been seeded to help hold the seed and soil in place until the seed has a chance to germinate.

The blankets are made from a variety of materials including:

  • Straw

  • Excelsior (Aspen wood fiber)

  • Coconut

  • Straw and Coconut

  • Coir (Coconut fiber twine)

  • Synthetic materials such as Polypropylene

Many of the blankets use a variety of nettings on one or both sides of them that degrade differently.

  • Photodegradable (degrades with sunlight)

  • Biodegradable (degrades with moisture)

Some of the blankets do not need netting on them because they are woven together.  These can be made of different materials

  • Coir

  • Jute

Heavier blankets that are designed to stay in the soil after the vegetation is in place are called Turf Reinforcement Mats.  These are typically placed and top-soil is placed over the mat.  These are much heavier blankets, sometimes reinforced with heavier netting or a grid.
